The first fun way to teach vocabulary is to do something called the word catchers. Where the teacher asked the student if they have heard any word catchers for today. The student must tell the teacher when/where they hear/saw the word and give the word in the context in which they encountered it. When the student uses a current or past word they get a reward. This would be a great tool to use to get students really excited to learn different vocab words. As we all know learning Vocabulary can be very boring.
The second fun way to teach vocabulary is to have students draw the words to help them learn it. Drawing really helps students visualize the words being taught and helps them with comprehension. I think it important that teachers let the students be creative with their drawings and have them make a funny picture because this will make the vocabulary more meaningful when they get to have a little bit of fun.
The third-way to teach vocabulary is to act the word out. A teacher can make the process of learning more fun, engaging, and meaningful if they let the students act out the words and other students try to guess the correct word. A great tip is to release the word list at the beginning of the week and make the game day at the end of the week.

The fourth way to teach vocabulary is to play eye spy. The students are given either a list of words to search for in a text or have them find unfamiliar words. I have seen students play a form of eye spy with the list of their spelling words and the students seemed to have fun and really enjoy themselves.
The fifth fun way to teach vocabulary is a concept sort but it just makes me think of the shooting hat from harry potter. In a concept sort, the students are given a list of words and sort the word in different categories based on their meanings. The teacher or the students can define the different categories. This is a great tool to help students get familiar with the new vocabulary of a text or a teacher can use it before reading to see the students' prior knowledge.

What I learned about going ton my own search is that are so many different fun, engaging, and meaningful way to teach vocabulary
Kayla,
ReplyDeleteI love those ideas! The word catcher is such a fun idea because students really need to think about and remember the word throughout the day. I also think the sorting hat would be so fun for those students who are into Harry Potter! Acting them out is such a great idea because it gets them up and moving and I know I learn better when I am not just sitting around.
I love these ideas! Acting the words out is a great idea to get the students up and moving! Their brains stay more active when getting up and moving! I agree with you that drawing is a great way and that visualizing the words helps them comprehend the words!
ReplyDeletePlan to share the scavenger hunt tonight! Loving the action!
