Graded Lesson Plans

Overall, I enjoyed each of the lesson plans that were discussed this week in class. I felt that each of them were great and I want to take these classes for the fun and engaging lesson.

The first person that went was Rebecca.  I thought her lesson over fiction and the plot of the story was great. The first thing that stood out to me was the seesaw activity because it just sound fun and I believe that kids would enjoyed it. The second thing that stood out to me was allowing her students to use a book that they have read so meaning that each flow chart could be something different. I agree with Rebecca that the extension and modification for student this young can be difficult because i'm having trouble also.

The next person that went was Rylee and  she had a lesson over the moon phases, which was so great. My favorite thing about this lesson was the Oreo cookie activity because this would keep the students engaged and I love little project like this for students. This help keeps leaning fun.

The third person that went was Debbie and she did a lesson over the part of speech. There are two things that stood to me. The first is the Anticipatory set because the video word crimes is funny and would keep the students entertained about the parts of speech. The second is the closure of the lesson because I love the idea the students get a note card to discuss what they know and what might they struggle with. Another great job!!!

The next person was Tiff and her less was over state taxes. The first thing I loved about this lesson was having them look at a paycheck and figuring out where there taxes go. I love how she put a real world spin to it. I also loved her closure and the questions she asked because this would allow her to know if the students got the concepts  she was trying to teach them.

The fifth person that went was Kris and his unit covers WWI. Overall I loved his lesson plan and I thought it was very well written. My favorite was the extension and modification that he provided for the students. I really the idea of a social media post about the person and giving student that struggle experts instead of full stories are great.

The last person that went was Sam and she did hers over the Pythagorean Theorem . I really love the idea of showing students on dot paper because I remember struggling with concepts and I think it would have been easier to use dot paper to explain it to me. I love the modification with using color pencil to help them understand to see the squares. Sam, I to struggled with the first lesson because it is the start and it need to set a tone for the rest of the lesson.

All I have to say is great job to everyone for a great class. I can't wait to see what you do with your lessons.

  1. Kayla,
Wow, we had a lot of the same thoughts on this week's class. Get out of my head girl! haha. Anyway, I agree that the lessons this week were great in the idea that they were fun and engaging and I think any student would get into them. I loved how our classmates made modifications for their lessons and how well thought out they were. It helped me feel more confident about my lesson plans personally. It was helpful to know that I am on the right track and doing what I need to be doing for my lessons. I didn't think we would get through as many people as we did and can't wait to see what else our classmates have came up with this week!

  2. Kayla,
I also loved Rylee's Oreo project. I think its important to make learning fun and engaging at any age. When something is fun, you are likely to remember it and form as association to the information you learned. For example, Rylee's future students may think of the moon every time they eat Oreos in the future and this could definitely help them remember the phases of the moon and the names for such.

Madeline Hunter Lesson Plan Design

The Madeline Hunter lesson plan is a seven parts, that include objectives, standards, anticipatory set, teaching [input, modeling, and check for understanding], guided practice, closure, and independent practice. I find this plan easy to follow because it breaks it down into simple steps. There are several things I find difficult with this lesson plan design. The first being research- based strategies because I need to get more comfortable using then in my lesson. The next being extension and modification because I find it difficult to come up with them without having knowledge of the education level of students.  I know that it just takes practice when writing lesson plans, so I'm excited to get better at it. That is why I love these courses because I get a chance to learn new things.

Fun Ways to Teach Vocabulary

http://theteachaholic.blogspot.com/2012/03/word-catchers.html The first fun way to teach vocabulary is to do something called the word catchers. Where the teacher asked the student if they have heard any word catchers for today. The student must tell the teacher when/where they hear/saw the word and give the word in the context in which they encountered it. When the student uses a current or past word they get a reward. This would be a great tool to use to get students really excited to learn different vocab words. As we all know learning Vocabulary can be very boring. The second fun way to teach vocabulary is to have students draw the words to help them learn it. Drawing really helps students visualize the words being taught and helps them with comprehension. I think it important that teachers let the students be creative with their drawings and have them make a funny picture because this will make the vocabulary more meaningful when they get to have a little bit of fun....
