The unit that I'm doing is kindergarten math -read and
write numerals and represent a number of objects from 0 to 20. As of right now I have nothing locked down, but I have several ideas. The first is a number scavenger hunt around the school or classroom. I really wanted them to go out and find numbers and objects out of school to make a connection why numbers are important and are used in everyday life. I'm not sure if that would work taking it home. I was going to have the students go around find numbers and objects. The second is I might do math centers if that can be allowed. I would have students go to different math center that would make them have to different projects working the all the numbers. For example put a puzzle together of a few numbers .
Let me know if you guys have any ideas that would be better. Working with kindergarten students I want to create something fun for them.

Kayla,
ReplyDeleteI love the scavenger hunt idea! Heck, I still love a good scavenger hunt as a 24 year old! And I have done scavenger hunts with littles before. Sometimes it can be difficult to corral them all, with them being excited for an activity on top of them being Kindergarteners. So I would not open it up to the entire school, but around the room I would think would be doable. I know that all the teacher's I have worked with or subbed for integrate centers regularly so that would likely be an acceptable route as well.

Kayla,
ReplyDeleteScavenger hunts are so fun! It may take a long time, but you could do a play ground scavenger hunt! Each clue could require them to get a number correct. For example, each student's hunt could go in a different order (so they can't just do what everyone else is doing). Then, they have to travel to different stations around the room and get the correct number for the answer. Then, they use those numbers to decode a special word which is their final answer. They turn in their sheet to you in the end with the word on the bottom. This will allow you to see where they went wrong if they missed one of the answers, keep all of them busy, and allow for a fun assessment! I think you have some great ideas!
I love your idea of a scavenger hunt. They can find numbers in their school (these could be pre-planted) or go and talk to the cook, janitor, principal, etc to see how they use numbers in their work (pre-planted as well)
