All About Me

Hello Everyone,
My name is Kayla Pool. I live in Versailles Missouri with my boyfriend, My one-year old daughter, my fifteen-pound orange tabby cat, and My 8-year-old chocolate lab.  I’m currently a stay at home mother until I finish my degree, which allows me spend time with my daughter and watch her grow. I’m pursuing a teaching certificate in early elementary and I’m hoping to go back to school to get a master degree in mathematics. I enjoy learning new ideas and facts just about anything that gives the opportunity to expand my knowledge.

I’m a huge fan of all kinds of documentaries. My two favorites being about crime and history. I hope to one day have the courage to film one. I’m also a big fan of Harry Potter and I have a movie marathon about 2 to 3 times a month. A fun fact is that I’m watching the 6th movie at this very moment as I write it. I have only one hobby which I’m a big toy collector of a sorts, this includes dolls, action figures, blind bag and etc.  I can’t wait to learn from each of you as you help me became a better future teacher.

  1. OH MY GOODNESS! Your daughter and cat are so cute!! I have an orange cat too so I feel the love. Is your cat sassy and picky about when he can and can't be pet? I think its an orange cat thing but mine may just really idolize Garfield haha. I think it is awesome that you get to stay home with your daughter. That must be so rewarding but exhausting. You sound like a fantastic mom. I'm also a Harry Potter and documentaries nerd! I love to watch documentaries on animals, crime, adventure, etc. Have you watched Adam Ruins Everything? It is a great series about the facts behind some of our more day to day things and the history on all kinds of topics. It may leave you a bit jaded toward some topics but definitely informative and will open your eyes to all kinds of stuff! I highly recommend it. I'm so glad we have a class together again and can't wait to learn from and with you!

Madeline Hunter Lesson Plan Design

The Madeline Hunter lesson plan is a seven parts, that include objectives, standards, anticipatory set, teaching [input, modeling, and check for understanding], guided practice, closure, and independent practice. I find this plan easy to follow because it breaks it down into simple steps. There are several things I find difficult with this lesson plan design. The first being research- based strategies because I need to get more comfortable using then in my lesson. The next being extension and modification because I find it difficult to come up with them without having knowledge of the education level of students.  I know that it just takes practice when writing lesson plans, so I'm excited to get better at it. That is why I love these courses because I get a chance to learn new things.

Fun Ways to Teach Vocabulary

http://theteachaholic.blogspot.com/2012/03/word-catchers.html The first fun way to teach vocabulary is to do something called the word catchers. Where the teacher asked the student if they have heard any word catchers for today. The student must tell the teacher when/where they hear/saw the word and give the word in the context in which they encountered it. When the student uses a current or past word they get a reward. This would be a great tool to use to get students really excited to learn different vocab words. As we all know learning Vocabulary can be very boring. The second fun way to teach vocabulary is to have students draw the words to help them learn it. Drawing really helps students visualize the words being taught and helps them with comprehension. I think it important that teachers let the students be creative with their drawings and have them make a funny picture because this will make the vocabulary more meaningful when they get to have a little bit of fun....
